Scary Things We Have Found on The Job

We at Jordan Air always work in tight and dark spaces installing hvac units and making hvac repairs. We are professionals when it comes to heating and cooling systems, but we do get a little scared when we see creepy and unusual things on the job. Carmine Costello, one of our great service technicians, shared with us one of his spooky experiences while working. His experience involved a very long hammerhead worm.

Carmine was working on a system and spotted the hammerhead worm all coiled up on the hvac. If you aren’t sure what a hammerhead worm is, it is basically a super thin, long worm that averages over 20 inches in length and is very invasive in the earthworm community. It quite literally has a head shaped like a hammer, and the species are known to be predators and cannibals to other worms and insects. Initially confused on what the little clump was, he recognized the creature upon further inspection. Carmine poked the hammerhead worm with his screwdriver, and then watched it begin to move and expand. It crawled from the drain line all the way up the top side of the air handler before it left the air handler altogether. Carmine claims that the worm reached about 30 inches long. Talk about gross! No one wants to run into a worm that size!

Carmine showed us a picture and video of the hammerhead worm making its escape. That creature was bigger than some small snakes. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want to encounter a hammerhead worm at work! But, just like Carmine learned, you can never know what to expect on the job -- so be ready for anything!
