Common Furnace Problems Georgia Homeowners Run Into Each Winter

You put the thermostat up and yet some rooms are toasty while others are not? Or perhaps the furnace has taken to making odd noises on start up. Then there is the matter of a heating bill that seems to be on the rise with no change in your habits to account for it.

You will find plenty of company if any of this is the case. Since 1993 Jordan Air, Heating, Plumbing, & Electric has been the go to for homeowners in Athens, Crawford and all of the Piedmont area of Georgia to get warm. Give us a ring at (706) 807-2309 if you want to speak with one of us.

The winters here in Georgia are not so much brutal as they are unpredictable. You may not need the heat one week, then a cold front comes in and the furnace has to put in some work after being idle. The stop-and-start nature of it is when you will find a problem lurking. Here are the ones we come across most.

The House is Cold Even Though the Furnace is On

We are called about this more than anything. There is air moving from the unit but it is not putting out enough warmth. It could be a number of things: an air filter that is clogged and blocking flow, a thermostat not set right or miscalibrated, or a gas furnace with an ignition or pilot light of some sort. In some instances the home is just too big for the furnace.

Then you have leaky ductwork allowing the heated air to get away from you. Most do not give duct leaks the attention they deserve; you can be paying to make warm air only to have it wasted in a crawl space or behind a wall. We put our Aeroseal technology to work to seal them up from within and put the heat where you need it.

Unusual Sounds From the Unit

Under normal circumstances a furnace should have a quiet, even hum. Anything else is the way the unit communicates:

  • A boom or bang at start up is typically delayed ignition
  • Squealing is indicative of trouble with the blower motor or belt
  • Rattling means something like a panel is loose
  • Grinding is metal on metal

A few of these are nothing to worry over, but left to themselves they can become a safety issue or a costly fix. If it does not sound like it did before, have it seen to.

Short Cycling

The furnace will run for a bit, shut down and be back on in a few minutes, never getting into a good rhythm. Short cycling puts a strain on the system and your energy consumption. An overheating unit, a dirty filter or a faulty thermostat are usual suspects. With so many possibilities a correct diagnosis is called for.

Heating Bills on the Up

When the numbers on your bill go up and you have not changed your usage, the furnace is likely straining to put out the same heat. Old equipment, lack of insulation, components in need of cleaning and ducts that are not tight will all have an effect. While a good set of HVAC controls can prevent you from heating an empty house, sometimes it is the equipment at fault.

Dust and Allergens

Your furnace is what moves air around the home. Without upkeep it will be distributing dust and allergens with every cycle. Should you see dust on surfaces or those prone to allergies having a harder time of it in the winter, the furnace and its ductwork could be to blame.

Make the Call

Changing a filter and seeing that the vents are clear is something you can do. For the rest a technician is required.
