BLOWER DOOR TESTING

what is a blower door test?

Building envelope testing (BET) is done through blower door testing. A blower door test locates air leaks by using a special fan to depressurize a house. Blower tests are conducted before and after air sealing to measure effectiveness of the work.

HOW MUCH MONEY IS ESCAPING YOUR HOME?

We're able to assess how much energy (and money) is escaping through air leaks, and how much you're likely to save by fixing those leaks. Building envelope testing (BET) or blower door testing alerts HVAC technicians of any drafts, leaks, or lack of insulation in your home, so that you can make sure to have holes or cracks properly sealed and any other problems addressed. As part of this process, we will inspect the house with a smoke stick to pinpoint potentially hidden air leaks (making it much easier to address them when the time comes to get to work).

  • If you are heating your house with wood, remove all fires out and coal too. There should not be ashes in your fireplaces before audit starts.

  • Be ready to go through every part of the house with the auditor. Think ahead of all ares that you know of that are drafty or difficult to condition.

  • The auditor may ask for access to every room even not used, every closet, attic and crawlspace. Be prepared for it.

  • You may be asked to shut all exterior doors and windows, then open every interior door and close any fireplace dampers or wood stove air inlets.

Expect the test to take an hour or more of your time depends on complexity of your house
